Myrtle Plant Used As A Wedding Flower

Myrtle flower has an interesting history. In Great Britain every royal wedding bouquet dating back to Queen Victoria’s wedding in 1840 contains at least one spring of myrtle. This is why also Meghan Markle’s wedding bouquet included a pretty white spring of Myrtle flowers when she married Prince Harry in March 2018.

In the folklore stories myrtle was considered the sacred plant of the goddess Aphrodite. “This goddess of beauty and love was born as a beautiful adult woman from the sea foam and she sought refuge in her newborn nakedness in a myrtle bush. This is why myrtle stands for chaste beauty. And therefore many brides even now wear myrtle as a symbol for innocence.”(Source: Susanne Fischer-Rizzi in Reference Guide For Essential Oils).
